University of Dar es salaam

Wellcome to the Department of structural engineering

The Department of Structural engineering (STE) was established in December 2001 under the Faculty of Civil engineering and the built environment (CEBE) in the College of Engineering and Technology (CoET) , the campus college of the University of Dar es salaam. STE is one of the four Academic departments in the faculty of Civil engineering and the built environment. The department is involved in Educational and advanced training of engineers in the field of analysis and design of civil engineering structures. Examples of structures are low and high-rise buildings, bridges, towers, underground structures, silos and fluid tanks among others. The department also conducts applied research and development in building materials, design and analysis of structures. The department provides professional services to the construction industry, government and other organization.

Physical facilities

The department has structures and building materials laboratory. The structures and building materials laboratory has several machines for testing of various construction materials. These include machines for testing quality and strength of building materials. In addition, the laboratory possesses other machines for appraisal of existing structures. The equipment is used mainly for teaching purposes, but also made available for professional services to the construction industry.

Teaching and learning

bullet Undergraduate programmes

The STE department provides courses to students who pursue the following degree programmes in the faculty of civil engineering and the built environment:

bullet Bsc. in Civil and Structural engineering;
bullet Bsc. in Civil and water resources engineering;
bullet Bsc. in Civil and Transportation engineering;

The total number of undergraduate students in the faculty of civil engineering and the builty environment is about 475.

bullet Postgraduate Programmes
bullet PhD in Structural engineering
bullet Msc. in Structural engineering
bullet Postgraduate diploma in Structural engineering

The department is running postgraduate programmes at Postgraduate diploma, Msc. and PhD. degree levels. The postgraduate diploma is delivered under coarse-work mode. The Msc. (Eng) programmes are being delivered under two modes, a coursework plus dissertation mode and a thesis mode. The PhD. programmes are exclusively delivered through a thesis mode. The department also undertakes Postgraduate training by a sandwich mode, whereby a student may study a part of the course in another university.

The department offers all the postgraduate courses also in part-time mode for engineers who cannot afford to stay for a longer period away from their duties. Similarly, the department offers evening classes for the postgraduate courses.

Professional development programme

Professional needs of the engineering community for continuing education, through tailor-made courses, are fulfilled in the department by conducting professional development programmes (PDP). Recently, a PDP course was conducted on design for earthquakes in Tanzania which was organized jointly with one of the professional institutions the Engineers registration board (ERB). Another PDP in computer aided structural design was conducted in 2002.

Research at the department is aimed at addressing engineering technology issues confronting our society. Some of the recent researches are:

bullet Repair materials for concrete bridges in collaboration with the faculty of construction, university of Dortmund, partially funded by DAAD.
bullet Effect of plasstification on the bulckling behaviour of non linear 2D rigid braced reinforced concrete frames, funded by NUFFIC
bullet Design for earthquakes and vibration in Tanzania, funded by UCLASS VLIR
bullet Semi-prefab concrete construction techniques for urban low cost housing funded by AICAD
bullet Development of techniques for proper management of structural materials and their ingredients, in tropical climate funded by SIDA/SAREC

Consultancy and services

The department provides consultancy services to the industry mostly by conducting quality control tests on construction materials, expert advice in construction technology. Further, a considerable number of consultancies have involved structural design and supervision of new of new construction works. These include design of the Computing Centre and faculty of commerce buildings at the University of Dar es salaam. The other major consultancy activity has been the appraisal of existing structure.
